HI EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!

I MISS YOU ALL!

FINALLY I GOT MY INTERNET ACCESS! omg i felt so disconnected from the world even though i didnt have internet only for 2 days! sheffield is LOVELY. the weather here has been wonderful. it's the start of autumn so the weather is pretty mild. everyone is so friendly it's been good (:

well even though i havent managed to come online the past few days, i've been bloggin (on microsoft word though!) so here are my past few entries! enjoy reading!

SUNDAY!

So finally I am here in Sheffield.
The flight over was amazingly more comfortable than I had expected it to be. Lots of leg room, managed to get lots of sleep (perhaps 7 hours or so – my flight was about 13 hours) despite how the babies sitting at the same row as I was were screaming and crying their heads the whole night long. The ear plugs and the melatonine pills worked like a miracle haha.

It was about 11degrees when we landed but it didn’t seem that cold when I stepped outside. Anyhows I needed so much help with my luggage it was embarrassing. Didn’t help that I got a faulty trolley that kept rolling to the right my bags kept falling off. Haha. The damsel in distress -- Thank goodness I’m a girl so you know it’s a lot easier getting the guys to help me carry my stuff. Sometimes I don’t even have to ask, some really gentlemanly people will offer to help.

The bus ride over was shorter than I had expected it to be. Took us about an hour to get from Manchester to Sheffield, and it was a lovely drive through the country side – saw cows and sheep and a lovely reservoir. Scenic I tell you. Pity I wasn’t fast enough with my camera I couldn’t get a decent shot of the lovely scenery.

I was a little disappointed when I reached Ranmoor (my hall of residence) though. It seemed…. Much older than I had expected it to be. But it’s not that bad. My temporary room is pretty spacious I even have my own sink. Hopefully my permanent room (which I will move into on Saturday and definitely need help with the luggage) will be roughly the same size as this one.

Walked out to Brookhill with the international students to get some groceries (lunch!). A tuna sandwich at Somerfield (the grocery store) costs about 1.45pounds, but I paid 2.89 pounds for a bottle of orange juice, 6 loafs of bread, McVities Digestive Chocolate biscuits, and 3 tins of tuna. See, much more worth it. Haha.

Walked around with Dave and YC to recce the place and check out Dave’s hall of residence. The walk down was easy but boy I tell ya, the walk up was equivalent to a workout on the thread mill. Sheffield is pretty hilly, so I guess I’ll be getting quite a workout everyday. So, when I’m back next year, everyone will see me with gorgeous legs and if they ask me how I got them I’d say “Go study at Sheffield” haha. I was so hungry I felt faint to I told them I needed to go back and get my lunch ready so we didn’t check out YC’s accommodation at further down the road.

Came back, couldn’t find my utensils in my overstuffed luggage so I had to use my hands to scoop the tuna and put them on my bread to make a sandwich. Desperate measures during desperate times. The sandwich was nothing spectacular I guess, it made me miss home cooked meals and made me think how lovely it would be if Jeev was here to make me that delicious Kim sandwich!

Called Jeev, called home. I miss everyone very much. Thank you everyone who came to send me off. Sorry I couldn’t spend too much time with each one of you, there were so many people so little time. Reading all those letters in the plane made me cry and wish I could pack every single one of you into my bag.

Anyway today’s quite a boring day. I have another 3 hours to kill before dinner time. And my internet is not up I’m typing this on Microsoft Word so that when I get my internet up I can just copy paste it hehe.

Tomorrow will be the official start of International Orientation and guess I will start to get busy then. The people I’ve met so far are really nice. There are 4 girls from Japan, 1 from HK, 1 from Germany, 2 from Malaysia on my floor. Can you imagine we all have to share a bathroom with two shower cubicles (that have no doors, only shower curtains) and a bathtub (that has no door, who on earth would bathe there!) and two toilet cubicles. Haha I’m so thankful I have my own toilet from Saturday onwards.

Heard we are playing soccer tomorrow! Yay! I need some physical activity! :D

Ohya! One thing about Sheffield I love is the sky. The sky reminds me of the sky in Melbourne. I don’t know why. Maybe because it’s so cloudless and clear today?

MONDAY!

It’s Monday and my internet still isn’t up. I realized how dependent I am on the net, I mean without it, I feel so disconnected from the world. Haha. Well not the world but from my family and friends – I feel… isolated.

Today’s been much more exciting as compared to yesterday. Today’s day one of orientation, and I met lots of people from all over the world. Kenya, India, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, USA, Spain, Barbados etc etc. It’s like a mini world here in Sheffield haha everyone’s from everywhere.

This morning’s breakfast was a BIG western breakfast. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, cereal, break, yoghurt, fruits. But me the small eater asked for small portions and I wasted a lot of food. Sinful I know, but, at this rate, I will seriously grow fat if I ate everything on my plate.

Received Daddy’ sms this morning, it was nice to hear from him, just wondering how everyone is doing back home. Managed to talk a bit to Jeev too, it’s weird cuz it was the starting of the day for me but it was already evening for him. I miss him sososo much. 

In the late morning, YC, Dave and I plus the Germany people walked down to Broomhill to get groceries and check out whether we could collect our bank stuff from HSBC there. Broomhill is like this small area where there are rows of shops – supermarket, second-hand shops, the postoffice, cafes, bars, hairdresser, pharmacy etc. It’s like a student area cuz a lot of students hang out there since it’s so near the uni and the residences.

Had to walk down maybe a kilometer to the university blocks where the other HSBC branch was to collect our stuff. It was the first time seeing the university, saw the children’s hospital, Firth court (where we have to register next week), the student unions’ building (which is where we’ll be visiting tomorrow), the hospital where I’ll be schooling at, and the other faculties.

Sheffield is SO hilly I tell ya. I got my workout today walking down to the uni, and up to Ranmoor, and the back down to the Sports Centre at the uni to play soccer! Haha. All that walking. Met a bone surgeon today while playing soccer (ohno can’t remember his name!) so cool, he’s gonna get his masters here in sports medicine. So I’ll probably be seeing him around at the hospital! It was so nice playing soccer. The weather here is LOVELY. It’s the start of autumn, I don’t even know what the temperature is like outside but I could wear a tee and shorts to play soccer and walk around and it felt fine. I played like 2 hours in the sun but I hardly broke out in sweat! Haha. I like.

Just had a shower, dinner should be ready in about half an hours’ time. I’m not really hungry even though I only had a sandwich for lunch. There’s gonna be salsa dancing class tonight, I hope it’s gonna be fun.
